MISSION, TEXAS – October 6, 2017– Mission EDC is excited to announce the Cityflag team as their next Expert-in-Residence. Cityflag, a social innovation company based in San Antonio, seeks to bring civic technology to the residents of Mission. Over the course of their three-month residency, Cityflag’s executive team, Alberto Altamirano and Alberto Gomez, will share their expertise in social entrepreneurship by offering workshops on Design Thinking and Leading Change. In addition, Cityflag will be mentoring three UTRGV interns where they will develop the basic mindset, knowledge, and insights required to pursue an entrepreneurial career, whether as the steward of their own career or as the founder of a new business in any field. Cityflag’s residency begins on November 1, 2017.

The Expert-in Residence program aims to connect Mission residents with experts in the ESTEAM fields. Cityflag’s expertise falls in the realms of social entrepreneurship, digital civic engagement, and human-centered design.

“Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response we have received on past tech-focused initiatives, we believe that our residents are ready to embrace social innovation. Now, with Cityflag as our Experts, Mission residents will build citizen-focused technology that will get us closer to becoming a Smart City,” said Alex Meade, Mission EDC CEO. “We chose to work with Cityflag because the team’s commitment to civil society goes beyond building digital products and applications; their goal is to increase digital inclusion, which is a value at the core of Mission EDC’s programming,” added Meade.

Alberto Altamirano, Cityflag’s CEO and co-founder, a graduate of Sharyland High School, will host the Leading Change class, inspired by Harvard Kennedy Executive Education: Leadership, Organizing, and Action program. Dr. Alberto Gomez, Cityflag’s COO and co-founder, a UTRGV alumnus, will host the Design Thinking class, which will explore ways to synthesize ideas into a cohesive and practical product. Dr. Alberto Gomez is a Professor in Communication and Design Thinking at the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas and a Scholar at the University of Texas San Antonio, where he is introducing a Smart City research initiative.
