Program aims to certify women in IT fundamentals
MISSION, TEXAS – SEPTEMBER 20, 2017 – – Mission Economic Development Corporation has launched a new program to provide free technology and computer science courses to the professional women of Mission. The Web of Women initiative will give women the opportunity to take a comprehensive 5-week CompTIA IT Fundamentals Certification course.
The course will begin on October 17 and is intended for women with elementary knowledge of computers wishing to obtain a vendor-neutral IT certification. Those interested must apply online. Fifteen students will be accepted into this class. Mission EDC will waive all class and exam costs to those selected. The classes will take place at the CEED building on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
From networking and cybersecurity essentials to hardware and software basics, the CompTIA IT Fundamentals Certification will provide students with the skills needed in a digital workplace. It’s ideal for those considering a career in IT or those working in an allied field that requires a broad understanding of IT. This certification can also be a stepping stone to more advanced certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+.
“We know that women want to advance their careers by acquiring new technical skills but few of them have the time or money to go back to college, pay for expensive online classes, or enroll in a full-time immersive camp. We created Web of Women with the intention of providing professional development to women who are beholden to a regular work schedule but still want to learn computer science in a classroom environment,” said Cristina Garza, Program Director. “Making up 52% of our population, women are a powerful economic force in our city. Mission EDC understands the importance of supporting the professional growth of our female residents, which in the 21st century, means creating opportunities for women in all stages of their careers.”
CompTIA IT Fundamentals is the first of several upcoming courses to be taught under the Web of Women initiative. The program is expected to expand onto other technical subjects but will continue to offer this particular certification on a regular basis.
